REST OF IRELAND

Large Military Camps that were established North and South of Dublin were dismantled following the end of the previous hostilities with the French and defences were replaced by a large number of Martello Towers. Waterford City was deemed vulnerable and 3 Towers were erected on the Hook Peninsula to reinforce the existing Fort at Duncannon.

In view of two previous major invasion attempts by the French in the South of Ireland increased armaments were provided at existing Forts and six Martello Towers were positioned at strategic locations and four on Bere Island with six gun batteries.

The Shannon Estuary leading to Limerick City was protected by 6 gun batteries positioned opposite each other to create crossfire and 3 Towers were position on the Clare/Galway coastline to ward off any attempt to land at Galway.    The next phase of Forts and Martello Towers were built at Shannonbridge and Banagher, the most likely crossing points on the Shannon that a large force would attempt to march to Dublin, also a Martello Tower(Meelick) and Fort(Keelogue) were built on a central island on the Shannon should longboats or rafts be used to transport troops to attempt an attack on  the British Military Camp at Athlone.

Fearing a possible attempt to invade Ireland from the North of the Country both Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle were heavily fortified with Martello Towers and Gun batteries.
