Conclusion:
Since the first comprehensive book on Martello Towers was published by Sheila Sutcliffe in 1972 (David and Charles Publishers) Limited, several more publications have appeared and I wish to acknowledge the Authors, whose painstaking research has broadened the field of material available and have made it possible for many, like myself to benefit from the detail they have provided on the purpose and extensive surveys that were carried out, prior to the actual building and placement of Towers and reasons specific locations were selected. Invaluable archive material has been researched and recorded of immense interest to historians and archaeologists and present day students who aspire to a future career in these fields. Material includes copies of plans, sketches expertly drawn and verifiable detail of Martello and Signal Tower locations and layouts and Ordinance, Costs and staffing of the Towers. (Recommended Publications: Castles and Fortifications of Ireland 1485 - 1945 by P.M. Kerrigan ISBN 0750915544 and Towers of Strength by W.H.Clements ISBN O850526795). Extensive field work was also undertaken in many countries, whereas my own was limited to visiting towers in Ireland , mainly the Dublin area, Shannonbridge, County Clare and County Galway and in general including in my views the areas the towers were intended to protect against possible landings. My Credits Page shows the extent of the assistance I have received in compiling the collection .When gathering information on martello towers located outside of Ireland I undertook the role of "armchair researcher" in front of my PC, thanks to the Internet and Google and Wikipedia Search engines. In many cases I have benefited from the contributors to WIKIPEDIA that have used images under the terms and conditions of the GNU Free Documentation Licence, full text available on Wikipedia .org Website.
